What 813 Family Dementia Caregivers Told Us

The realities of caring for someone living with dementia — in their own words

What can we learn when we listen closely to the experiences of family dementia caregivers?

This new Dementia Impact report draws on 813 contributions from family caregivers supporting spouses, partners, parents, relatives and friends living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The report explores recurring themes in their experiences — including the emotional and practical realities of caregiving, the expectations caregivers place on themselves, and the support they say makes a difference.

It also considers what these experiences may mean for organisations working with people and families affected by dementia.

The report explores:

  • What caregivers repeatedly told us about their day-to-day experiences

  • The expectations many caregivers place on themselves

  • Why asking for or accepting help can be difficult

  • The types of support caregivers describe as valuable

  • Questions these findings raise for organisations developing treatments, services and support
