About Dementia Impact
Better dementia decisions need more than good intentions.
Dementia Impact is an independent research and advisory initiative helping organisations better understand people affected by dementia and turn that understanding into practical action.
We bring together direct caregiver insight, research into what organisations are actually doing and more than 30 years of practical dementia-care experience.
The result is a perspective grounded in the experiences of families, informed by emerging practice and focused on what organisations can realistically do.
About Harvey Zemmel
More than 30 years of practical experience in care and dementia
Dementia Impact was founded by Harvey Zemmel, who has spent more than three decades owning and operating residential care homes, including specialist dementia care.
Harvey previously built and operated a 12-home care group and continues to own and operate care homes today. His wider leadership experience includes six years as Chairman of Jewish Care and eight years as a director of the Leeds Care Association.
He is also the founder of All About Alzheimer's, an independent information community reaching more than 23,000 family dementia caregivers, predominantly in the United States and UK.
Dementia Impact grew from those two perspectives: decades spent providing care and the opportunity to listen directly to thousands of families living with dementia.
What does your organisation need to understand, improve or achieve?
There isn't one standard dementia challenge — and there isn't one standard Dementia Impact project.
We work with organisations at different stages, from those trying to understand an issue for the first time to those already delivering dementia initiatives and wanting to improve or measure them.
Understand
Hear directly from people affected by dementia.
Explore a specific question through caregiver surveys, interviews, qualitative feedback and analysis — from needs and experiences to decision-making, communications, services and new ideas.
Typical engagement: Caregiver Insight Project
Assess & Improve
Understand where you are now — and what could be better.
Review an existing dementia approach, learn from relevant practice elsewhere and identify strengths, gaps, priorities and practical opportunities for improvement.
Typical engagements: Independent Dementia Review · 90-Day Programme Plan
Measure
Know whether what you're doing is making a difference.
Define meaningful outcomes, determine what can realistically be measured and create a practical approach to capturing and demonstrating impact.
Typical engagement: Impact Framework
Research
Answer a question that matters to your organisation or sector.
Commission independent research into a dementia-related issue, opportunity or emerging area, drawing on caregiver insight, organisational interviews, existing evidence and analysis as appropriate.
Typical engagement: Commissioned Research
Start with the question — not the project
You don't need a finished brief or a large consultancy project.
You may simply have a question:
What do families need?
Are we doing the right things?
What are other organisations doing?
Where are the gaps?
What should we do next?
How do we know whether it's working?
A focused first project can answer the immediate question, identify priorities and give you something concrete on which to base your next decision.
If further work would be useful, we can decide that afterwards.
Tell us what you're trying to achieve
If your organisation has a dementia-related question, challenge or opportunity, we'd be interested to hear about it.
Tell us briefly what you're working on. We'll explore the issue with you and whether Dementia Impact is the right fit.
